In 1994, Alberto Vallarino, a leader in social innovation and change, founded Valores del Istmo. His initiative was a visionary project for social and community development that set new standards for corporate volunteer efforts. Valores del Istmo contributed to improving the quality of life of thousands of Panamanians, in remote and impoverished regions around the country, through several frameworks: health, education, access and nutrition, among many others.
In 2007, Fundación por un Mejor Panamá was established to help those most in need, and continue with the ambitious programs of social responsibility developed by Valores del Istmo, in Panamá.
In one a year with volunteer support from marginalized communities, Fundación por un Mejor Panamá built training centers for youth and adults, supported programs for reforestation, the environment, gymnasiums, sports fields, kitchens, and refurbished schools, libraries, nursery schools and parishes nationwide. Moreover, it built pedestrian bridges, improved nutrition in schools and early learning facilities, delivered donations to victims in the neighborhood of Curundú, and the province of Bocas del Toro, in Panamá.
