Penonomé City

It is the capital of the Providence of Coclé with a population of 61,000. It was founded in 1,581, and during the year 1,671, after the destruction of Panama City (today Old Panama), it served as the capital of the Isthmus until the new city (today Old Quarters) was built.

Penonomé is known for the "Pintaos" hats, made from palm fibers in two colors: black and white. These handcrafted hats are very delicate, mainly because of their fine weave. The finer it is the more expensive the hat. There is an ample variety of styles and materials on display, organized according to the regions and towns were they were made.

The market also offers handcrafts from all over the province. The most highly regarded ones are the small delicate dolls dressed in folkloric costumes.
